December 7th, 2007what’s it worth to you?
I was perusing some websites earlier and noticed a blog on being a frugal homemaker - the author of the blog posted an impressive series on feeding yourself for $14.71 a week.
Our budget for weekly groceries is quite a bit more than that. It’s a lot easier for us now to buy fresh, organic produce year-round and we recently decided that spending extra money to make sure we buy locally farmed/bred meats was worth the expense. Could we feed ourselves for $14.71? If I didn’t have diabetes I think I’d survive just fine. Some things in life are worth extra money, and for me, I am grateful we are in the position and have the opportunity to buy locally grown and organic foods.

This is one of my main complaints with “frugal” shopping/housekeeping whatever you want to call it. If I wanted to eat Hamburger Helper & the like all the time, sure I could feed my family for probably half of what we spend now. But, we just don’t eat like that. Prepared foods are not on our list. And with D, we are eating a lot healthier than ever. So I feel I am doing good to keep our weekly grocery bill to under $100. Keeping stock of what’s in my pantry/freezer & only going to the grocery once a week do a lot for keeping the grocery bill down.
I love fresh fruits & veggies. Even more so if they didn’t destroy the earth in the process.

Exactly - and if I wanted to eat pizza, which isn’t the healthiest food for me to eat because of all of the carbs, instead of choosing something like Little Caesar’s, I’d rather save the money and eat a nice slice of whole wheat spinach pizza from Zachary’s. And support a local company to boot.

The other thing is, to me those weren’t all satisfying meals. I get what she was saying but the thing is I’m not saving money if I make an onion soup for supper or have potatoes and salad, and then I’m so hungry by 9 that I’m eating everything in the fridge. I’d rather spend a few more bucks and make a filling meal.
Also, the coupons and that are great but are you still saving money if you have to drive all over town to three or more stores to buy everything?
